Dear Chairperson Cropp:

We are a class at Bowen Elementary School in Washington, DC.

Today, we read a story about some children in Florida who got the state fruit changed to the orange. We were impressed by their dedication to this cause. The Governor even came down to sign the bill into law at their school!

This got us thinking. What we be a good official fruit for Washington, DC? After we discussed it among ourselves, we decided that a cherry would be perfect. We remembered the story of George Washington and the cherry tree. Since this story is a fable about honesty and integrity, we believe it is a fitting symbol to represent the people of Washington, DC.

So, we are contacting you to see if you will support our idea. We also would like to know who else we should contact about this. At this time, we are contacting the Mayor, other Council Members and School Board Members.

Thank you for thinking about making the cherry the official fruit of Washington, DC.

Sincerely,
